Section five: Quarks  Facts

1.      Particle physics / high energy physics) is a branch of physics dealing with the nature of the particles (smallest detectable ) that constitute matter and radiation.

2.      The Standard Model is the dominant theory explaining these fundamental particles and their interaction.

3.      Quarks and Leptons are the "elementary particles" which are the basic building blocks of matter.

4.      There are six flavors or types of quarks (up, down, charm, strange, top, bottom).

5.      Mesons are particles of  intermediate mass and they are made up of pair of quark and antiquark. Three quark combinations are called baryons. Proton and neutron, build from up and down quarks are the most common quarks.

6.      Quarks appear only in mixture of two quarks
7.      The baryon number is one-third  the difference between number of quarks and antiquarks. Baryons which has two quarks and one antiquark have a baryon number of 1 and  meson have a baryon number of 0

8.      The most popular quarks are the up and down quarks and they have the least mass because they make up protons and neutrons.
